- Baghdad
BAGHDAD
Brief history for one of the oldest extant civilizations.
The city of Baghdad is believed to have been the largest city in the world from 775 to 935. The population of Baghdad was the first city to grow to more than a million people. The city has verbal history dating its west bank founding on Tigris River as 30 July 762 by the Abbasid dynasty, led by caliph al-Mansur. But the city of Baghdad is mentioned in pre-Islamic texts, including the Talmud. So,Baghdad was probably built on the site of an earlier city. This city replaced Ctesiphon, the capital of the Persian Empire (which is located 20 miles southeast of Baghdad), and Damascus, as the capital of an Umayyad Muslim empire stretching from North Africa to Iran.
The Origin of the city's name is figured to be the Persian/Kurdish words for "God-given" derived from "bagh" (God) and "dad" (given.) Most archeologists feel a city "given by God" implies a wonderful or heavenly place. A few historians think the word baghdad is from an Aramaic phrase for "sheep enclosure" as the original Baghdad was about 2 kilometers in diameter surrounded by a constructed barrier. Caliph al-Mansur employed Naubakht, a former Persian Zoroastrian and Mashallah, a former Jew from Khorasan, Iran to conceive the city. Naubakht decided that the date of Baghdad’s foundation should be astrologically significant. Verbal histories feature Baghdad as the "Round City." Early maps and illustrations* reveal a ring of business and home constructions built close to the inside of perimeter walls. Later construction built an interior ring. A central mosque and a compound for guardsmen were built at the heart of the city. Use of the area around the Mosque in the city’s center is still unknown, but the city’s shape is evidential reference to Persian precedents for Firouzabad in Persia.
